Tools and Process

Sometimes we struggle to begin things; finding our inspiration tends to be harder than establishing a thought or tackling the subject. So here are some workarounds I've found that have helped me get through burn out.

#1 Game Plan

It is extremely important to establish the means to tackle something. For me, this means making an outline and/or strategy to go about finishing something. Diagramming is a sure way to slowly figure out a plan. There are many ways to go about the diagramming stage. May it be outlining, self-induced deadlines, drawing, organizing, checklists, etc. They all are short and concise ways to figure out what to do before doing it. Don’t overcomplicate it.

#2 Subtly

Avoid large description, turn down tone to increase emotion, avoid time alone with the character, use spare dialogue and connotations. The larger the emotion, the larger you need to tone down the description.

#3 Get Lyrical

Write as poetically as possible. Make the boring that is life sound as fantastic as possible, not by making bad things sound better. But by making your descriptions grotesque. "Poetry is.” Everything is a form of sweet, beautiful rhythm that we call poetry. Poetry is the art of words and can be applied to everything.  Sound linkage and image clusters promote flow and rhythm, clarity and theme, it also promotes emphasis and tone.

#4 Filter Stimuli

Make the character feel alive. The dynamic that is people to world is quite vast and changing. Every emotion is different but we all share them, just differently. Capture that by going deep into the character and “read” the setting, others, actions of their hermeneutic language and self.

Writing is like a Spring flower budding after the winter's cold North winds. This frigid air does not last forever, much like our blocks. However, we have to pull our petals apart for our craft to bloom.
